6th Student S
Lives: In Wellington Mon-Fri with aunty and uncle and on Kapiti Coast in weekends with grandparents, Mum lives in Auckland, Dad in South Africa, S migrated to NZ a few years ago, still has friends there so Facebook useful to stay in touch.
likes Wellington; mother has tertiary qualification and has explained how uni/degrees work. Seemed very nervous to start with, while communication well. Thoughtful and well prepared despite age.
Schools: Wellington High School; Year 12; studying DDC (digital design and communications), fashion, physics, maths, english
Interests outside of school: Rock climbing (indoor and real rock), Internet for school work only, Likes cooking so watches show on You Tube
Awareness/preparedness for post-school: Started thinking about Uni in Yr10 as older brother started looking (he is now second year design student at Vic), so more aware and better informed than most Yr12s. Has not yet been on any open days or career events, as she has to ask each teacher for permission {implied it is unusual to ask/get this in Yr12?}. However, did go to Careers Expo.
Post-school options: Keen on university, especially architecture and/or design. Vic rates up there because she has accommodation here, her brother likes it and friends locally. Also considering Auckland Uni and will visit in holidays when seeing Mum (who lives up there).
Want to know from website: Wants to know about courses, what is on offer, what it involves, what she will learn, exactly what is covered. Also wants to know about the papers, what points are, and about the structure here at Vic. What are electives? In the case of Auckland Uni, she wants to know about accommodation, both costs and options available.
High level I/A: Numbered are where to find info about what you want to study, rest were to tease out understanding of the term.
- Faculty and schools: What is available (labs, computers, etc); faculties would be all about professors and teachers, whereas schools would be the campuses (e.g. Vivian Street)
OR Study at Vic (equally)

- Other areas:
- Current Students: Experiences they go through, what 1st year was like for me so others can benefit from an early indication/warning
- Future students: No idea even with prompting
- About us: overview of uni
- Learning and teaching: what you would learn in/from courses
2nd level I/A: Numbered are where to find info about what you want to study, rest were to tease out understanding of the term.
- Courses or maybe degrees: Kind of like subjects at school
- Qualifications: is the outcome, degree is what you go/work towards
- Careers: Keeping the bigger picture in mind
- Study area: Area you could study
To enrol: Study at Vic
Starting on the home page: Asked to find a subject or area they wanted to study
Went to Learning and Teaching, not what was expected so back out. Saw COurse FInder (in Quick Lins)
Easily worked out UG option and selected a subject "Architecture" form the drop down
Read through many of the courses with interest but probably though they were subjects (based on drop down).
Went in to one. What do points mean? Cost is important. Appreciated location and timetable information
Outline, especially prescription was useful/appropriate
Redirected to look for a subject, had to be assisted back to home page.
Used search for architecture. Entered first result, which was Faculty homepage. Then went to Study and subjects (all old style)
Interested in inter-subject credit restrictions (as she was familiar with the school equivalent)
Worked out core cf electives from written materials.
Degree page: Helped to find it
Took quite some time to read but she understood the information. Insufficient explination on what a point is.
Would have benefited from a summary of the key information up front/on top of page
Some important info burried (if you want to be a registered architect this is five years; and entry into the second year is based on average results from first year courses)
Appreciated seeing course table that showed how each specialisation differs from the others.
Subject selected for Treejack: Need to match up with results in the tool
- Architecture
- Media design
- History
Additional notes from Anne
Info needs:
- Range of what’s available
- Design and A – papers you do
- Structure – how it works
- Accom (if went to Akd)
- Cost
