Tash Davey (Unlicensed) and/or Ron Sulit (Unlicensed) In checking this study area for PG links that 404s I think this is one of the most needy pages I found

  1. For Classical Performance, the link for postgraduate study must go to  http://www.victoria.ac.nz/nzsm/study/postgraduate for now, but later to www.victoria.ac.nz/explore/postgraduate-subjects/performance/about
  2. For Composition, the link for postgraduate study must go to  http://www.victoria.ac.nz/nzsm/study/postgraduate for now, but later to www.victoria.ac.nz/explore/postgraduate-subjects/composition-sonic-arts/about
  3. For Jazz, the link for postgraduate study must go to http://www.victoria.ac.nz/nzsm/study/postgraduate for now, but later to www.victoria.ac.nz/explore/postgraduate-subjects/performance/about
  4. For Music Studies, it needs to be UG/PG. Also the link for postgraduate study must go to http://www.victoria.ac.nz/nzsm/study/postgraduate for now, but we either add the BMus(Hons) to the study area or something else. Gabe Ryan (Unlicensed), what were your intentions?
  5. For Music, it needs to be UG/PG. Also the link for postgraduate study must go to  http://www.victoria.ac.nz/nzsm/study/postgraduate for now, but later to www.victoria.ac.nz/explore/postgraduate-subjects/music/about

You may not need any prior musical knowledge for many courses including the ones in non-Western music and music technology and the academic study of popular music, jazz and classical music, and film music. BA students can also take Performance courses in Māori, Pasifika and Indonesian gamelan music. These will give you the opportunity for cultural learning through making music.

Please add a new story -

John Psathas

Professor in Composition

Pull quote “The backdrop for musical creativity is now global. Multicultural and multi-genre—we work and learn in the most exhilarating times.”

My teaching and research are focused on arriving at an openness that takes the ever-emerging advances in technology and communication and turns them into fresh creative and collaborative opportunities.

Global connections

This new global context has enabled long-distance collaborations with author Salman Rushdie, jazz legends Michael Brecker and Joshua Redman, rock musician Serj Tankian and, more recently, my No Man’s Land project—that involved 150 musicians from 25 countries. One of the great pleasures of No Man’s Land was directly involving three MMA students in the filming and recording of musicians in Europe and India.

Creative possibilities

This breadth of possibility is taken much further in the diversity of my current postgraduate students’ work. Their research and creative topics include Ethiopian jazz, film scoring, songwriting, Pasifika musical identity, and new hybrids of musical genres that can’t yet be labelled.

The top paragraph in Stephen Clothier's profile is missing. Copy it from below as I corrected a typo:

Journey to NZSM

Growing up in Hastings, I played the piano, organ, violin, cello and viola and was heavily involved with orchestras, choirs and chamber ensembles. This led to an interest in composing, which in turn blossomed into a desire to study Composition in the NZSM.

In Melissa Cross' profile, the first paragraph is missing:

A new direction

I returned to my early love of music eight years ago, after working as a registered nurse and beginning a family. When I arrived at university, I felt somewhat misaligned, like a slightly raised key on a piano. To my relief, I found the NZSM lecturers encouraging and inspiring, and to my delight my fellow students, be they composers, performers or attentive listeners, enriched my learning in unexpected ways.

Just as importantly, Victoria provides a really comprehensive range of options, so you can study Music here in all kinds of ways, and that's pretty rare.”

  •

Sam Motion (Unlicensed)http://stage.victoria.ac.nz/explore/study-areas/music/people

In Emma Sandford's profile, the first paragraph is missing (hope this isn't some weird Squiz quirk!):

You can't beat Wellington...

I auditioned for both NZSM and Auckland University and was accepted into both, but the many pros NZSM had over Auckland—the city of Wellington, the resources available, the guitar teacher, moving away from home—and the fact that I would be among other guitarists as opposed to being the only one studying up in Auckland, really drew me to Wellington. Nothing beats studying an instrument with others to inspire and challenge you.
