Pull quote: I am now a Policy Analyst for the Older People’s Policy team, where we deal with a wide range of policy issues about supports and services for older New Zealanders and the people close to them.

    Chris Nimmo

Master of Arts in Social Policy

After finishing my Master’s degree in Social Policy, I went into the Social Policy Graduate Programme at the Ministry of Social Development.

    Facing the policy issues

I am now a Policy Analyst for the Older People’s Policy team, where we deal with a wide range of policy issues about supports and services for older New Zealanders and the people close to them, and the challenges and opportunities presented by our ageing population.

I have also had the chance to work in the children’s policy space – with its own, very different range of challenges.

Prepared for policy work in New Zealand

Studying Social Policy at Victoria helped me into this role by giving me the confidence and analytical rigour necessary to write and speak constructively about policy. It has also given me a solid background in the history of New Zealand social policy and how government works.

    Asking the right questions

While knowing a lot about the policy area you are working in is always useful, I have found that knowing how to ask the right questions, knowing how to challenge assumptions, and identifying the right way of framing an issue is just as useful, and I have felt well-equipped for this.
