If you do decide you want to carry on with a research focus, you have not closed any doors. First-hand experience I’m a post graduate of Victoria and I loved it because of the hub that Wellington provides for interactions, from working with government departments and contributing to development of policy, through to on-the-ground action that makes a difference for conservation. The field course component is like eco-tourism with assignments. It provides an invaluable insight into New Zealand’s conservation landscape, and it’s an opportunity to see the inside workings of projects and make contacts for work experience.
