WORDPRESS HOSTING

Why we use SiteGround for WordPress hosting
In times past, the University sought a solution to address the limitations of our enterprise CMS (Squiz), particularly when it came to bespoke design and functionality. Our CMS is robust, but not always suited to the needs of every project—especially externally funded research sites, research projects, and showcases for clients. At the same time, our internal development resources were limited.
To provide a more flexible solution while upholding brand integrity and digital best practice, Digital Engagement made the decision to support a small number of off-channel websites, where appropriate. These are hosted on SiteGround, a managed WordPress hosting platform.
This approach allows staff to build the digital tools or content they need, while still benefiting from support and guidance aligned with the University's digital strategy and style guide.
Approval to create a site
All new site requests—whether they are hosted within the University's primary web channel or off-site (e.g., via WordPress on SiteGround)—must go through Digital Engagement.
We have an intranet page outlining key considerations when planning a new site, including audience needs, governance, sustainability, and digital risk.
Digital Engagement's role
Digital Engagement supports off-channel websites by:
Assessing the request for an independent site
Facilitating a basic https://victoriauniversity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/CS to help the team clarify their purpose and audience
Clarifying roles and responsibilities:
Staff are responsible for all content creation and technical implementation.
Any custom development must be resourced by the owning team.
Ongoing site maintenance—including plugin updates, security patches, accessibility, and content updates—is the responsibility of the site owner.
Digital Engagement provides hosting infrastructure only (via SiteGround), not technical, development, or content support.

Providing access to sites in Wordpress
Some site owners are new and don't have the log-ins. We can access the sites for them via online-services@vuw.ac.nz and grant them access. They should use a generic email address.
