Work in progress

This page documents the suggested changes to the subject groupings (sometimes referred to as topics and mega-areas) that come from or arrived after the future student user testing started. They are here for consideration by the team before a decision is made. The background reading is (at a minimum) the groupings that were tested (mastered in an Excel sheet) and the rationale for the testing. I have not captured subjects that have been added, removed or renamed if it was due to a factual inaccuracy.

1

Move cultures from Social Sciences to Languages and linguistics, renaming it to be Languages, linguistics and cultures.

Cultures is not really a social science and people studying languages almost always study cultures

Kristina and MelissaI think this is a substantive improvement but impacts the category label

Just do it.

Discus title with FHSS

2Single subject page Maori Studies currently handles three majors (Māori Resource Management, Māori Studies and Te Reo Māori). Wish to continue with this approach. We might need to repeat subject in Languages" and in "CulturesKristina and Melissa

A little tricky/confusing. Maybe we can put the resource management and studies on one subject page in cultures and the language in languages?

Should Māori Resource Management be linked to from elsewhere?

Make new topic Māori and Pasifika., includes 3 Māori subjects and Samoan

Discussion to come

3

Samoan Studies/Fa’asamoa is the only Samoan subject, mostly language (with a little culture) so needs to be with languages). Remove the cultural subject.

Balance of courses and course content

Either include Commercial law in Law or make strong association between the two. Strong link preserves registration focus of Law as a topic.

Treejack results

Paul

Strong, as most people looked in law and did so first (might be question wording).

Hard link from Law to Commercial Law

Soft link from Commercial Law back to Law

7

Merge Library Science in to Library and Information Studies

Merge/list only once because they are so similar and recruit from a small pool (i.e. professional librarians), etc

AllanStrongJust do itDone
8

Repeat Geography (the whole topic) in Social Sciences.

Treejack shows that Geography is hard to find in science

Paul

Strong. Science had a 27% first click. It was almost as often looked for in environment (28%) as in social science (30%), so maybe a soft link to Environment.

Is Development Studies now too buried?

Repeat whole Geography topic in Social Sciences (with Development Studies inside).

Soft links both ways from Geography to metatopic for other instance

Done
9

Project Management requires a soft link to Business, probably Commerce.

Treejack shows people often looked here

Paul

Medium. 26% of first click. However, we must make clear what type of PM this is.

Discuss with VBS soft link from either Business or Commerce

Discuss with VBS and then FAD adding (Construction) or (Building) after Project Management

Do it in content work

See discussion points

Not so important

10

Environment requires a strong link to Biological Sciences, and visa versa

Treejack results show 30% of people clicked there first.

11

Implement row 8 to solve much of the confusion here.

Possibility of soft links to Environment and Government.

Treejack shows that Development Studies caused issues/confusion

Paul

Strong

Medium to weak

Discuss with School of Geography what else their students major in

Implement row 8

See discussion point

Better solution (see below)

12

Information systems (the whole topic) needs repeating in Business

Treejack shows that it was often looked for there (first). Also cleared with Allan Sylvester

Does not fit anywhere else. Recruits its own students/ Has its own programme

15

Treejack shows 38 people looked for Political Science is Science, 53 in Social Science and 64 in Government.

16
