1.5.1http://stage.victoria.ac.nz/explore/study-areas/language-teaching/study
  •  Andrew Bredenkamp (Waiting for app update) Moving from TESOL to the BA, the subject doesn't transfer to a selected major, despite being in the url as a parameter.
  •  Delete the unnecessary BA entries (2nd of the 3 looks best to me, but under the first heading) left from Shenbo's attempts to get this right.
  •  Create a new section below the 'Example courses' that is headed 'Graduate qualifications' with tool tip 'A certificate or diploma at an advanced undergraduate level that requires an undergraduate degree for entry.'
  •  Temporarily (until this qual is available in the app) add the 'old style' degree-like entry as follows. Too tip 'trimester'

Graduate Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages – GCertTESOL

1 trimester (60 points)

I will have this link changed to the 'in-app' one as part of the go-live for the qualification.

  •  Create a new section below the 'Graduate qualifications' that is headed 'Postgraduate study' with content including text 'Find out about this subject at postgraduate level and what your qualification options are.' and a blue button [Postgraduate Xsubject nameX] linked to http://www.victoria.ac.nz/lals/study/postgraduate

If you've been learning Te Reo Māori, Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Italian or Spanish you can continue studying your chosen language at a higher level, while developing an understanding of the language learning process and teaching methods.

While not a teaching qualification in New Zealand, you'll graduate able to plan language teaching programmes and carry out language education research.

    Carmen Harji

    Bachelor of Commerce and GCertTESOL

Pull quote: I could not have asked for a better start to my teaching career.

Carmen enrolled in several undergraduate courses in linguistics and TESOL as part of her BCom in International Business at VictoriaUniversity of Wellington.
“After completing my BCom, and inspired by these courses, I enrolled in the Graduate Certificate of TESOL, a 12 week programme taught over the summer trimester.”
    Following a passion
Carmen’s personal interest in geographically isolated and traditionally resource-constrained teaching contexts led her to work with the Ladakhi Women’s Travel Company in Northern India’s trekking base of Leh
“Our mission is to provide young Ladakhi women with a livelihood whilst challenging traditional work roles in the male-dominated industry of mountain guiding.”
Her work with this company involves building the basic language capabilities of porters in a lower English proficiency class through to addressing wider societal issues such as climate change, development and gender equality in classes for more proficient trainee guides.
    Set up for success
The practicum component of the GCertTESOL was of particular value to Carmen.
”It gave me the confidence to lead classes and experiment with ways of managing a class to provide maximum opportunities for actual language use in the classroom. I could not have asked for a better start to my teaching career.”

Mae Lewis

Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics, GCert TESO

Pull Quote: Every day of teaching I draw on skills and knowledge from my qualifications.

After graduating from Victoria with a BA in Linguistics and a GCertTESOL, I travelled for a few months and eventually settled in Santiago, Chile, where I have spent the past two years teaching English in a private British school.

Relevant learning

One thing I love is how relevant the courses I studied atuniversityare for my job. Every day of teaching I draw on skills and knowledge from my qualifications, whether helping students with their pronunciation, thinking about the influence of a student's first language, or thinking about the vocabulary load of a text and deciding which words to pre-teach.

New experiences

The GCertTESOL has been especially valuable for helping me with teaching methodology and classroom management strategies. Teaching in a different culture has been a huge learning experience.

Prepared for the challenges

Every job will always have its challenges, but I feel well prepared to meet them. It has been challenging but rewarding - and there is nothing quite so rewarding as seeing your students improve.
