Key messages for interview requests

A little more about us and the role:

  • The tertiary education sector in New Zealand is predominantly public, especially in the university-space
  • Victoria University of Wellington is one of eight universities in New Zealand, located in the capital and considered a high performing, state-funded university.
  • The Web Team is a part of the Communications and Marketing division. While we do employ technical people (who work closely with our corporate IT), we have a strong focus on enabling communication and marketing outcomes using web technologies.
  • We currently support more than 140 web sites and more than 240,000 pages of content. Most sites are based on the CMS Squiz, but we also have other technologies, some legacy  (Wordpress, Wix, Dreamweaver, etc) and others emerging (Silverstripe).
  • We have recently moved our much of our recruitment content to an AngluarJS approach (see any URL starting with www.victoria.ac.nz/explore (e.g. http://www.victoria.ac.nz/explore/postgraduate-subjects/postgraduate-computer-graphics/about and http://www.victoria.ac.nz/explore/degrees/science/about) or www.victoria.ac.nz/courses (e.g. http://www.victoria.ac.nz/courses/accy/130/2017/offering?crn=23001) and would like to expand this work.
  • We are seeking cost-effective ways to increase our capacity to do more work and as such have approached Integrated Office Solutions to be our ‘agent’ in the Philippines.
  • We are seeking a good, mid-career web developer as our first and local staff member, both to do development work and to recruit and supervise other more junior staff (1-2 this year, then we evaluate how well things work).
  • This web developer must have most of the following skills:
    • Experience with a large scale CMS. Eg Drupal, Joomla, ModX or SilverStripe
    • Experience in front-end web technologies, such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript
    • Experience with JIRA (or Trello) and Confluence
    • Experience with version control, especially GIT and Github.
    • Experience with libraries such as SASS or LESS, and Jquery
    • Experience with Front-end development tools such as Grunt, Node, and Angular.
    • Experience supervising or managing staff
  • From reading your resume, we believe that you do, which is why we are keen to move to an interview.
  • Should you be successful in applying for this role, we intend bringing you to New Zealand for a week or two, as a part of our induction and training. Getting to know each other is important to us, as only this way can we get the best from working together.
  • Should you be successful in applying for this role, we would involve you in the recruitment of the next 1-2 staff. You will have a good understanding of the local market and culture, as well as being present in person.
  • In the first 6-12 months, our priority is migrating many old sites into new Squiz templates. This may mean that the next staff we engage would be web content specialists with a good technical understanding, rather than developers. However, we can discuss this in the interview.
  • In addition, we have other development work that is likely to come to our overseas developer. Some examples include
    • Supporting and extending our AngularJS app
    • Working up a conference management solution using Wordpress, plug-ins and a suitable theme
    • Assisting in the testing of international functionality, especially a CDN
