- Updated following discussion with Stuart and Craig on 23/2/16.
Duration/intensity
The BE(Hons) represents four years of full-time study and may also be studied part-time.
Entry Requirements
To be accepted into the BE(Hons) you need to
- achieve University Entrance for at least one of the admission types.
Supplementary information
"In additional to the admission requirements on . . ." and table (GUS, p.83).
If you haven’t got enough NCEA credits to meet the prerequisites of the mathematics or physics course you require, don’t worry – you can make up for this by taking a bridging course. However, you need to understand that this means your degree will almost certainly take longer.
- Students without enough NCEA Mathematics credits will need to take MATH 132.
- ECEN students without enough NCEA Physics credits will need take PHYS 122 before PHYS 115 and 114.
"If you don't have the . . ." (GUS, p.83)
Degree requirements
- Total of 480 points required, of which:
- At least 120 points must be at 400 level and above, and listed for the BE(Hons).
- Complete the requirements for at least one major subject (selected from the drop down list below).
- 300 and 400-level courses may only be counted towards one major.
- Complete at least 800 hours employment or work experience in an approved engineering environment.
- Students must obtain at least a B average across all Part 1 courses in order to be admitted in to Part 2.
Supplementary information
The BE(Hons) degree consists of several components which you will need to complete:
Part 1 consists of seven or eight 100-level courses which provide the necessary foundations for the BE(Hons). Ensure you take the right courses for your chosen major (selected from the drop down list below) as set out on the following pages. While many are shared with other majors some are different, so read carefully. If you are unsure about which major you like, speak to staff in the School of Engineering and COmputer Science about selecting courses that preserve your future choices.. To successfully complete Part 1 of the BE(Hons), you will need to pass all Part 1 courses required and achieve at least a B average in those courses (students who achieve a lower average will be able to transfer their courses to a BSc.). You may begin to take your Part 2 courses prior to completing Part 1, as long as you have passed any specific course prerequisites.
Part 2 is the core component of the BE(Hons) and is made up of various 200-, 300- and 400-level courses. While some courses are in common to all majors (the professional practice and work experience, as decribed below), most are specific to the major you wish to study (selected in the drop down list below). Part 2 comprises:
Professional Practice consists of a set of courses (ENGR 301, 302, 401 and 489) required for all majors which develop a professional approach to engineering. You must have successfully completed Part 1 (with at least a B average) in order to enrol in any of these courses.
Work Experience consists of three courses (ENGR 291, 391 and 491) and 800 hours of approved work experience in an engineering environment required for all majors. The courses will help you prepare to apply for and work in appropriate employment. This will normally occur in the summers following your second and third years of study. Full details of the BE(Hons) work experience programme are on the School website.
Major courses: Various courses required for your chosen major (and not already covered by Part 1), whether these courses are specified exactly or you select from a defined range of courses.
Elective courses are required in order to bring the total number of points to 480. These may be selected from any courses offered by Victoria University, including those taught by the School of Engineering and Computer Science.
If you achieve good grades during your BE(Hons) degree, and particularly in your third and fourth year courses, you will be awarded the degree with First-Class Honours, Second-Class Honours (first division), or Second Class Honours (second division). To be eligible for a class of Honours you would normally complete your third and fourth year courses within at most three consecutive years.
