Faculty and school content on victoria.ac.nz

This version is old and for reference only. Most recent version: A new approach to faculty and school content (v.2)

See the above PDF for pretty diagrams. For ease of commenting, however, I've pulled the content out into some ugly tables below.

Content by audience

Future students, influencers

Recruitment information should be discoverable primarily by topic/discipline, not by organisational structure.

Notes

Regular review. Professional maintenance informed by close relationships with Faculties and Schools.

A subject area might be ‘owned’ by one or two schools/faculties

Demonstrates easily understandable pathways.

Shows some flexible options.

Quarterly review.

Enable students (especially postgrad) to get a feel for the research culture of the area of study they are interested in.

Current students

Time-sensitive communication with current students should mainly happen via other channels.

Notes

We can put faculty specific info on more central pages if need be.

Pages where each faculty’s info/thing (eg student advisors) is different can have filtering options.

Notes

Largely, F& S information that staff use (ie. info for students) will be contained elsewhere.

But if there's more, it should go in the Staff hub. If we need to create small faculty areas, so be it.

Central content that can go across any and all of these areas

Staff

Profiles should centrally housed, linked where relevant (news, Ask a Researcher…, events). We should have the means of pre-filtering content for use in certain areas. Needs good tagging.

News

Create once, publish selectively. Centrally housed. News items should be surfaced/promoted where relevant. News feeds in some areas should be professionally curated. Needs good tagging.

Events

Events should centrally housed, linked where relevant (social media,  newsletters). These should be mainly promoted through targeted channels. Needs good tagging.

Faculty and school areas

About us

Purpose: our people and place in Victoria.

Most content should be dynamically pulled from central repositories through filtered widgets – eg. staff, events, news.

Faculty content

Prioritised in order of importance

  1. Marketing blurb. A punch, non-audience specific paragraph about what is special and distinct about the faculty. This is not a welcome.
  2. Contact block for the Faculty office. Location, contact details, opening hours. Map?
  3. Programmes and courses: Link to pre-filtered page that pulls though programmes and courses associated with this Faculty from the central repository.
  4. Our staff: Pre-filtered link or area that shows staff who work in the area. Should be able to be further filtered - e.g to pull out a type of staff (Faculty student advisers).
  5. Research, news and events: pre-filtered page by Faculty tags.
  6. Embedded Facebook feed or promo tiles for surfacing timely/important things and as a back up for people who don't use Facebook.
  7. Associated schools: (see pull out for school info)
  8. Message from the Dean
  9. Mission, values, history.

School content

  1. Marketing blurb. A punch, non-audience specific paragraph about what is special and distinct about the faculty. This is not a welcome.
  2. Contact block for the School office. Location, contact details, opening hours. Map?
  3. Our staff: Pre-filtered link or area that shows staff who work in the area. Should be able to be further filtered - e.g academic vs general?
  4. Research, news, events: pre-filtered page by School tags.
