From Paul: Insert the 'Search for a subject' that is currently on http://www.victoria.ac.nz/study/programmes-courses/subjects to just above 'Search programmes and courses' on http://www.victoria.ac.nz/study. Brings study area navigation closer to the home page.

Further improvements to search should wait for a 'search based' solution using the GSA replacement

From Joe: Optimise the page to lower its size and number of requests browser needs to make to download a content. This could apply to any/most/all page and ideas include:

  • Optimise images to save 1.2MiB. Large images are the mega and study area images, rest are static resources that could be moved to KeyCDN
  • Minify JS to save 20KiB and HTML to save 5KiB. Can we do this with Squiz pages?
  • Do not include assets, scripts and resources page is not using actively.

From Joe: URL reflects the open/closed state mega and study areas. Benefit is that:

  • Using "back" function in a browser, which would return a user from subject (or topic... in the future), back to already expanded topology (~ he would not have to expand all the boxes again to select different study area)
  • A user could share specific list of subjects/topics by simply copying -> pasting URL
  • A user could bookmark what he had found.

From Joe: Log search terms used by real users and use them to improve our keywords/synonyms, keywords?Should

From Andrew: Track how people are using the page. E.g. if someone click directly through the navigation and then leaves the page to go to that subject it can be marked as a success.

If someone goes down one branch of the navigation, then goes down a different branch and leaves the page to a subject - log which paths they went down and look at possibly moving that subject into a separate area. If someone navigates through the page then searches (in the general Victoria search, not navigation search filter) - log which paths they went down and what the search term the ended up using and see if it may be worthwhile altering subject names or locations or adding alternate terms.

This will provide us with clear evidence on the strengths and weaknesses of the navigation and how it can be improved, or how we can demonstrate its success on particular areas if requested.
