  • David Rowswell (Unlicensed) please replace the entire GIS section with this. It's a little unconventional so please ask if you're not sure what I'm after.

    Geographic Information Science (GIS) PG

Explore spatial and geographic data using computer-based systems. Create new ways to visually interpret and present this information—on maps and map layers, using smartphones and mobile devices as data viewers, and even through interactive infographics.

You'll investigate the ideas behind the creation of these systems and think about the way we can conceptualise spatial problems—from disaster management, to conservation monitoring, to archaeology.

Undergraduate courses (just black bold heading)

While Geographic Information Science (GIS) is a postgraduate subject at Victoria, you can study it at undergraduate level as part of the Geography programme. This approach includes the courses [GEOG 215 http://www.victoria.ac.nz/courses/geog/215/] Introduction to Geographic Information Science and Science, and [GEOG 315 http://www.victoria.ac.nz/courses/geog/315/] Advanced Geographic Information Science. An introductory level GIS course [GEOG 415 http://www.victoria.ac.nz/courses/geog/415/], is also available to postgraduate students. These courses might be right for you if you are working and looking to upskill in this area, or if you are studying another discipline, such as Earth Sciences, Computer Science, Economics or Biology.

    Postgraduate programmes (black bold heading)

You can complete a qualification in GIS at Master’s or Postgraduate Diploma level. These programmes are taught collectively by Victoria University of Wellington, the University of Canterbury and Auckland University of Technology, combining the expertise of academics at all three universities.

Find out more about the programmes on the [Masters in Geographic Information http://www.mgis.ac.nz/] website. For more information about studying GIS at Victoria you can contact the programme director:

  • Tymara Oberdries (Unlicensed) (Be careful cos it's live!) Under Why wellington change text to read:

Wellington is at New Zealand's political and scientific heart. It's the seat of government and the site of embassies and high commissions, non-governmental organisations and Crown Research Institutes, like GNS Science and NIWA. It's also the home of some fascinating natural features—like a major fault lineand a short trip away from the Volcanic Plateau and the southern glaciers.
