    Name: Miriam Meyerhoff
    Professor of Linguistics
    Story text:

    Learning to be local

I started thinking about language variation when I moved to New Zealand at the age of six and I really wanted to sound ‘local’.

    Beautiful Babel

Analysing language variation means grappling with what it means to be human—theorising and modelling language varieties is a weighty enterprise I’m proud to be part of. And to do it, I've talked to such wonderful people, all over the world. My world is a beautiful Babel.

    Research interests

I've studied how migrants learn to sound local, how whole communities juggle multiple language varieties and create something new that is all their own and how language allows us to express our femininity or masculinity. Everything I listen to is data, but the speakers connect me to communities here, and in all my fieldwork sites.
