  • Tymara Oberdries (Unlicensed) Please make some corrections to the BSc degree requirements, but be careful as this page is live. Please HipChat me to check as soon as you have made the change. The error is that "A maximum of 30 points if taken to satisfy a second major from another first degree at this university and" should say "A maximum of 60 points if taken to satisfy a second major from another first degree at this university and" but I have taken the opportunity to update the punctuation, so the full set of degree requirements are as follows.
  • Complete at least 360 points, of which:

    • At least 270 points must be from courses listed for the BSc

    • At least 210 points must be from 200 and 300 level courses, including:

      • At least 150 points must be from courses listed for the BSc
      • At least 75 points must be from 300 level courses listed for the BSc
  • Courses listed for other degrees may be counted as being BSc courses, including:

    • A maximum of 30 points if taken to satisfy a BSc major

    • A maximum of 60 points if taken to satisfy a second major from another first degree at this university

    • A maximum of 60 points across both these categories

  • Complete one course in MATH, PHYS, QUAN, STAT (or an approved equivalent) at any level

  • Complete one approved course that demonstrates competency in oral and written communication

  • Satisfy the requirements for at least one major subject (see below)

  • Tymara Oberdries (Unlicensed) under statistics important information add text below.

    Important information

    • You should include one or both of MATH 177 or STAT 193 in your first year programme.
    • Entry to MATH 177 requires at least 16 credits at NCEA level 3 Mathematics or Statistics, including standards AS91578 (Differentiation) and AS91579 (Integration) or MATH 141.
    • If you don’t have standards AS91578 (Differentiation) and AS91579 (Integration), you’ll need to do MATH 141 and then MATH 177
    • MATH 142 and MATH 151 are prerequisites for some of the third year Statistics courses. Keep this in mind when planning your degree.

  • Tymara Oberdries (Unlicensed) under mathematics Important information add text below

    Important information

    • For entry into MATH 141, MATH 151 and MATH 161 you’ll need 16 credits in NCEA Level 3 Mathematics or MATH 132.
    • For entry into MATH 142 you’ll need NCEA Level 3 Mathematics achievement standards AS91578 (Differentiation), AS91579 (Integration) and one of AS91573 (Conics), AS91575 (Trigonometry) or AS91577 (Complex Numbers). At least two of these need to be achieved with Merit or Excellence. Or equivalent background in Mathematics or after passing MATH 141.
    • For entry into MATH 177 you’ll need 16 credits in NCEA Level 3 Mathematics or Statistics, including standards AS91578 (Differentiation) and AS91579 (Integration) or MATH 141.

  • Tymara Oberdries (Unlicensed) under Chemistry Important information add text below.

    Important information

    • If you have completed 18 credits in Chemistry at NCEA level 3, including including AS91390 (Thermochemistry & Structure & Bonding), AS91391 (Organic Chemistry) and AS91392 (Equilibria in Aqueous Systems), you can start with CHEM 114 in trimester 1 and do CHEM 115 in trimester 2.
    • If you have completed NCEA level 2 Chemistry, but have not achieved 18 credits in NCEA level 3 Chemistry, you’ll need to do CHEM 113 in trimester 1 and CHEM 114 in trimester 2.
    • If you achieve an A- or better in CHEM 113 you may take CHEM 115 at the same time as CHEM 114 in trimester 2.
    • Although CHEM 113 is an open entry course, it is strongly advised you take CHEM 191 in the summer trimester before taking CHEM 113 if you have not completed NCEA Level 2 Chemistry.
    • Successful completion of CHEM 114 and 115 will allow you to enrol in 200-level Chemistry courses the following year.

1.5.0-6Alida Steemson (Unlicensed)http://stage.victoria.ac.nz/explore/degrees/science/requirements?major=physics
  • Tymara Oberdries (Unlicensed) under Physics and Applied Physics important information please add text below. same text fro both subjects.

    Important Information

    • If you have achieved 18 credits at NCEA level 3 in Physics including AS91524 (Mechanical systems) and AS91526 (Electrical systems) and either AS91523 (Wave systems) or AS91521 (Practical investigation), and NCEA level 3 Mathematics (Calculus) standards AS91578 (Differentiation) and AS91579 (Integration), you can start with PHYS 114 in trimester 1 and continue to PHYS 115 in trimester 2.
    • If you don’t have the NCEA level 3 Physics requirements listed above, you’ll need to first pass either PHYS 122 in trimester 1, or PHYS 131 in trimester 2.
    • If you don’t have the NCEA Calculus standards listed above, but you do have 16 credits of NCEA level 3 Mathematics, then you should take MATH 141 in trimester 1.
    • If you don’t have 16 credits of NCEA level 3 Mathematics then you will need to start with MATH 132, either in the summer trimester before beginning your studies or in trimester 1. If you pass MATH 132 in the summer, then you can take MATH 141 in trimester 1, however, if you take MATH 132 in trimester 1, then, because of university timetabling constraints, you will not be able to take MATH 141 until trimester 1 of your second year. If you gain an exceptional grade in MATH 132 you may then be permitted to take PHYS 114 and MATH 141 concurrently, otherwise you will not be able to take PHYS 114 until your third year. It is important you understand that this means your degree will take longer than three years to complete.
    • Once you have either the NCEA Physics requirements or PHYS 122 or PHYS 131 and the NCEA Calculus requirements or MATH 141, then you will be eligible to enrol in PHYS114 and PHYS115.
    • If you have outstanding grades in both NCEA Level 3 physics and calculus, then you may be eligible for direct entry to some 200 level physics courses. If you would like more information about this contact the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences (scps@vuw.ac.nz) when you have your results.

Change first two paragraphs in First year to:

In your first year you're likely to take seven or eight courses from a range of subject areas. There are no core courses common to all majors in this year—choose the 100-level courses from subjects that most interest you. However, your BSc must include one course in either Mathematics, Physics, Statistics or Econometrics, and most students do this in their first year.

It’s a good idea to look ahead and think about what you might like to study in your second year, as your chosen major may have specific prerequisites for advanced level courses.
