  • Made all changes requested by Stuart and Craig
  • Added a duration/intensity (that really come in to its own for part-time only qualifications and PG (where there is a specified maximum duration as well as the standard full-time minimum)
  • Revised the entry requirements.
  • Fine-tuned the first degree requirement.
  • And created a new revised expression that is far more closely aligned to how we have expressed all other degrees. For recruitment we value consistency (for students still roaming many degrees) over degree-unique expressions.

Duration/intensity

The BE(Hons) represents four years of full-time study and may also be studied part-time.

Entry Requirements

To be accepted into the BE(Hons) you need to

  • achieve University Entrance for at least one of the admission types.

Supplementary information

"In additional to the admission requirements on . . ." and table (GUS, p.83).

If you haven’t got enough NCEA credits to meet the prerequisites of the mathematics or physics course you require, don’t worry – you can make up for this by taking a bridging course. However, you need to understand that this means your degree will almost certainly take longer.

  • Students without enough NCEA Mathematics credits will need to take MATH 132.
  • ECEN students without enough NCEA Physics credits will need take PHYS 122 before PHYS 115 and 114.

Degree requirements

  • Total of 480 points required, of which:
    •  At least 120 points must be at 400 level and above, and listed for the BE(Hons).
  • Complete the requirements for at least one major subject (selected from the drop down list below).
    • 300 and 400-level courses may only be counted towards one major.
  • Complete at least 800 hours employment or work experience in an approved engineering environment.
  • Students must obtain at least a B average accross all Part 1 courses in order to be admitted in to Part 2.

Supplementary information

The BE(Hons) degree consists of several components which you will need to complete:

    • Part 1 consists of seven or eight 100-level courses which provide the necessary foundations for the BE(Hons). You will need to ensure you take the right courses for your chosen major as set out on the following pages. If you are unsure about which major you like, leave your options open by taking all the courses required for any major. To successfully complete Part 1 of the BE(Hons), you will need to pass all Part 1 courses required by your major and achieve at least a B average in those courses. (Students who achieve a lower average will be able to transfer their courses to a BSc.)

    • Part 2 is the core component of the BE(Hons) and is made up of various 200-, 300- and 400-level courses. The courses you take will be primarily determined by your chosen major. You may begin to take your Part 2 courses prior to completing Part 1, as long as you have passed any prerequisites.

    • Part 3 consists of three courses outside of your major forming a coherent addition to your programme of study and approved by the Dean. At least one of the courses must be at 200 level or above. Also known as the 'breadth courses' this is an opportunity to explore some other interests outside of the BE(Hons) programme.

    • Professional Practice consists of a set of courses required for all majors (ENGR 301, 302, 401 and 489) which develop a professional approach to engineering. Note that you must have successfully completed Part 1 (with at least a B average) in order to enrol in ENGR 301, 302, 401, and 489.

    • Work Experience consists of three required courses (ENGR 291, 391 and 491) and 800 hours of approved work experience in an engineering environment. The courses will help you prepare to apply for and work in appropriate employment. This will normally occur in the summers following your second and third years of study. Full details of the BE(Hons) work experience programme are on the School website.

    • Selected courses some majors require students to make a selection from some listed courses in order to bring the total number of points to 480.

If you achieve good grades during your BE(Hons) degree, and particularly in your third and fourth year courses, you will be awarded the degree with First-Class Honours, Second-Class Honours (first division), or Second Class Honours (second division). To be eligible for a class of Honours you would normally complete your third and fourth year courses within at most three consecutive years.

Thoughts and questions

Although I took the supplementary information from the handbook it disagrees with the Calendar and might mislead students. For example, the professional practice and work experience courses are actually Part 2.

Further, at what stage do students need to understand the various 'parts'? How does this work on a website that must cater for recruitment of school leaves and information for current students?

How do we weight 'consistency with other degrees' cf 'educating students about the structure of the BE(Hons)?

I am not sure that this is really the correct use of electives, or at least it is inconsistent with the main university definition. Rightly or wrongly I have changed the word to 'selected courses', as they are selected from the courses listed, like a kind of 'restricted elective'.

Which contrasts to how I have defined Part 3, so please check.

What does approved mean here?

Thoughts and questions

I can't see the Part 3 mentioned in the Handbook for this major?

Is listing the individual courses sensible? It gives more information on the screen but might be more prone to being out of date. Range takes less screen space (especially important for mobile versions). Both range and specified courses will link to Course Finder.
