  • Tymara Oberdries (Unlicensed) and this story to the people page:

Pull quote: I majored in Sociology because sociologists are real life superheroes! Once you put on the sociology lens, there is no turning back.

    Fatimah Syed Hussien

    PhD candidate in Sociology

    Choosing the best

When considering universities I looked out for its academic prestige and location. The reason I chose Victoria over the others was because even when I was 8,835km away, my inquiry and interest was treated with such kindness and warmth by this amazing academic, now my supervisor!

    Worth the upheaval

I knew Victoria was going to be a university worth relocating my small family for. Three years later, still the best decision I have made. I majored in Sociology because sociologists are real life superheroes! Once you put on the sociology lens, there is no turning back.

    Plenty of opportunities

I have had amazing opportunities at Victoria to grow at my own pace. Just earlier this year, I was able to present at The Asian Conference on Cultural Studies in Japan! I have also been given opportunities to give guest lectures to undergraduate students and present at seminars and conferences about my PhD research.

    A wealth of knowledge

Studying Sociology at Victoria is great because the department holds an amazing breath of academics that are conducting significant work in the social field. The sociology department is in the School of Social and Cultural Studies which also includes Anthropology and Criminology.

    Love Victoria, love Wellington

I have made so many colleagues in the school from different parts of the world and I have learned plenty and gained so much insight into my own research too.

Studying and living in Wellington still feels like a dream. Everything I love is just a reach away; coffee, beaches, and hills! Wellington may be windy but it is a very warm city.
