Doing a PhD - when the MCom by thesis is loaded the content should read as follows with the link to the Masters.

The Master of Applied Finance does not provide the research skill set necessary for PhD study. If your goal is to pursue a PhD, the Masters of Commerce by research is the correct program for you.

In Peter Latham's story change semester to trimester.

Learning while I work
Following my internship I was offered a full time junior trading role, where I sit on the cash desk and manage the bank's daily liquidity. No two days are the same and I am surrounded by experienced, intelligent, and team working people who I learn from every day.
I continued my studies, taking one paper per trimester and finished my Masters in 2015.

Tool tip missing for block format

Andrew Bredenkamp:

  1. App is getting error: angular.js:13708 Tooltip ID `Block` has not been found in the list of available tooltips and so it won't be tooltipified.

I think it either has to be `block-format` or we need to create `toolTip` with key 'block'.

  2. Second error is "angular.js:13708 Tooltip ID `Masters by thesis insert link when available` has not been found in the list of available tooltips and so it won't be tooltipified."

Add these three to the people page:

Selina Li, MAF

Market Surveillance, NZX

After completing my Bachelor’s degree, I came to Wellington hoping to find a job that matched my academic background.

I didn't know what kind of job I'd like to do and just accepted everything offered, until one day my work colleague introduced me to the VIAF programme.

A good idea

The idea of "learning by doing" really appealed to me so I decided to give it a go, and during my study with this programme I built up sound knowledge in finance which I had not gained from my undergraduate study. I also significantly improved my Excel and financial modelling skills, which are crucial in any finance job.

Extras opportunities

I was also given the opportunity to work as a Sessional Assistant for the courses, helping me build confidence, improve communication skills, and get networking opportunities. I also gained skills in self-learning and time management, and how to balance study, work and life.

A job in finance

After completing the VIAF programme I landed a finance job with NZX, initially working with Indices team. I then moved to the Market Surveillance team, monitoring trading activities and investigating potential market manipulation behaviour.

The best choice

Finance knowledge, self-learning and Excel modelling skills gained from the Applied Finance programme helped me adapt to new systems and learn complicated technical operations processes very quickly.

Choosing the Victoria Applied Finance programme is one of the best decisions I ever made. It helped me gain solid knowledge and skills in finance, and build up work experience to start my career.

Puneet Chugh, PGDipFA

Product Controller, Bank of New Zealand

A career in finance

During my final year of Undergraduate study, I developed an interest in finance and decided to pursue a postgraduate qualification and career in this area.

I chose the Victoria Applied Finance programme, as the course structure was really very appealing and the university is renowned throughout the world.

A thorough education

The courses are very comprehensive, covering all aspects and fields of finance, and provided me with an insight into the financial industry and how the financial markets work.

The programme is flexible because you can choose the courses you want to do each trimester from a wide range of options.

Challenges and benefits

Being an international student was very hard at times, because I had to manage my studies and part-time work. However, this experience has taught me the most important skill of 'Time Management'.

The best thing about studying in the programme was the interaction with people from different ethnicities and cultures. The lecturers also come from all over the world and from a wide variety of backgrounds, which adds to the appeal of the programme.

Reaping the rewards

Overall, it has been a fantastic experience for me, as I benefitted both personally and professionally. I landed a job as a Product Controller at the Bank of New Zealand after the completion of my post graduate diploma in Financial Analysis.

The analytical and technical skills gained through study in the Applied Finance programme helped me land this role, and are now proving to be very useful in my work.

Peter Latham, MAF

Trader, Bank of New Zealand

Life after cycling

In 2012 I retired as a professional cyclist after a 10 year career that included two Olympic Games, two Commonwealth Games and 10 World Championships.

After retiring from cycling, my wife and I moved to Wellington and I was fortunate to sit down with a number of people working in senior roles in financial markets. It became apparent that they all had postgraduate qualifications, and I decided to enrol in the Applied Finance programme at Victoria.

Real world learning

I chose the Master of Applied Finance as it deals with real world practical situations, which really appealed to me. I studied full time in my first year, and as I was also working 25 hours a week running a coaching business, the block course format allowed me to juggle both study and work.

Internship opportunity

At the end of my first year I was awarded the Cayne Dunnett BNZ scholarship which included a six-week internship in the BNZ dealing room.

This was a fantastic opportunity to spend time in the dealing room, and to get an understanding of some of the different parts of the business. I spent two weeks with the finance team, two weeks with the sales dealers, and two weeks with the traders.

Learning while I work

Following my internship I was offered a full time junior trading role, where I sit on the cash desk and manage the bank's daily liquidity. No two days are the same and I am surrounded by experienced, intelligent, and team working people who I learn from every day.

I continued my studies, taking one paper per semester and finished my Masters in 2015.
