Stuart Brock - Associate Dean (Postgraduate Research), HSS Faculty Administration
Jane, Paul and Nick
Nick's notes
Staircasing
FHSS have nested programmes
Nursing - students tend to start on the lower steps - Master's is not the key focusmain focus. This is partially because it is easier to negotiate fees with DHB if things are done in smaller bites. There is a new marketing brochure.
Pathway to PG
Stuart would prefer pathways into PG to be via programme/discipline not qualification
Attracting international students
PG student information needs
or school
Research vs Teaching degrees - differences can be the support, commitment and the background needed.
Could grow their 180 taught Masters.
PG student information needs
The expertise and research projects of the people who teach the programme. Students often have a very specific area of interest (sub-sub-subjects - not just philosophy, or ethics, but applied ethics for example). This is often because they're looking for research supervisors.
Scholarships
Other ways to fund study - teaching/tutoring/research assistant jobs
Domestic - getting Student Loans and any other state support
Attracting international students
All or almost all of their 180 point Master's can be completed in 12 months (3 trimesters) - save time and money (this is also relevant for domestic students)
They will come to Victoria because a world expert in a particular area is here.
Mainly at Masters (MA) or PhD level
New vs. continuing
1/4 new (doesn't include people coming back after time away from study or people in second year of a qualification)
3/4 current FHSS are going to design a 'study at vic' style evening for them to boost enrolments
Resources
They'll send us a Word version of the draft updated faculty handbook
The Master of Fine Arts is a new qualification and they've got documentation that includes key marketing messages, including for internationals.
