Alfio’ first book, Touring the Screen: Tourism and New Zealand Film Geographies (Intellect, 2011) examines the phenomenon of film-induced tourism in New Zealand. The book brings film criticism into a new relation with perspectives developed from recent studies of tourism, film history and cultural criticism. Alfio is also the author of The Bloomsbury Companion to Peter Jackson (Bloomsbury, 2016), one the most comprehensive studies of the New Zealand filmmaker's body of work.

Changes to Stephen Hay's story - including putting 'Sharknado' in italics. Replace highlighted hyphens with em-dashes.

Stephen Hay
Master of Arts candidate in Media Studies
Having the opportunity to research and examine the value of often-derided aspects of modern culture is a unique privilege.
Love learning
Stephen Hay started his undergraduate studies at Victoria, earning a BA in Philosophy and Media Studies. He continued on to postgraduate studies, gaining First Class Honours in Media Studies, and is currently completing a Master's.
New ways of watching
His thesis examines how the actions and rituals of audiences that group-watch cult and ‘so-bad-it’s-good’ films have moved online. He specifically examines how audience members of Syfy Channel’s Sharknado engaged with the movie - and each other - on Twitter during its initial screening. As a case study on ‘paracinema,’ he argues that such practices increase viewer fulfilment as they also generate value for the broadcaster.
Working in the industry
Stephen has worked on film sets and for film festivals, as well as in better paying but less stimulating jobs in public transport. He co-hosts a podcast, Your Worst Movie Please, that reviews various types of “bad” films.
